VitaClay VM7900-8 Smart Organic Multi-Cooker/Rice Cooker : Great for making yogurt

I could not be more pleased with the vitaclay rice cooker. It is everything i hoped it would be. I probably invested about $1000 of my time researching rice cookers before making this purchase. I was very concerned about the vitaclay due to prior reviews i read here. I called vitaclay’s manufacturer twice and i also did research at a lot of other sites. Ultimately, i decided to take a chance on the vitaclay, but i also planned to order a purely stainless steel model too. However, now that i have used the vitaclay for a week (cooking with it every day), i know this is the rice cooker for me. I do not need to look any further. It cooks perfect brown rice.

Healthiest, cheapest paleo beef stew ever. Cheapest lead-free crockpot i’ve seen – i won’t buy the black glazed stuff at the store2. Makes a full pot of stew for 3-5 people, depending on portion size3. Small, compact, easy to store4. Comes with a recipe book that supports, vegans, vegetarians, paleo, and low fat folks alike5. You don’t have to be precise with cooking time at such low temperatures (see below for more details)the details:the more i read about metal cookware, the more i’m convinced i need to stick to glass, lead-free clay and porcelain, not to mention the cheap clay pots that are painted with glazes that may contain lead among other toxins. Actually, i’m all about paleo, and i started reading about slow cooking as a very healthy way to cook your meat – it preserves the integrity of the fats, enzymes and proteins. Heating meat up above say 200 destroys a lot. Based on that reading, i looked quite a bit for a crock-pot i felt i could trust, to no avail.

I will update this review once i’ve used this product for the first time. It is simply beautiful to look at. Everything arrived well packaged and without any damage at all. I do this, and never have a mold problem, even if i haven’t used the cooker for weeks. I have used the cooker for various dishes- mostly slow-cooking stews with veggies and tougher cuts of meat. It’s also worked well to steam veggies; i might leave it on for 10-20 minutes, then turn it off and let them “finish”. Flavors are locked in quite well. There’s no chance of exposure to lead glaze or aluminum, thanks to the ceramic pot. And it was a good value (i got it on sale for under $100, free shipping). Within the first month, i got concerned, as the unit wasn’t turning on. I talked to a real person, who really helped me over the phone. (ha, the cord was slightly unattached to the pot. )if i did it over again, i would probably purchase the instant pot ip-lux60 6-in-1 programmable pressure cooker instead, as it pressure-cooks, but also sautes, cooks rice, and slow-cooks. Plus, it comes with a triple-bottom-layer stainless steel insert, so again, there’s no concern of lead or aluminum byproduct.

Love the concept, but needs improvement. I have been using this multi-cooker for about a month now and and so far i am pleased with the results. I really like the clay pot and have not had any issues with it as i have followed the instructions of the manual. It cooks rice and stews very well and it has made my life so much easier with the delay timer option. It does need some improvements though. For instance, it leaks quite a bit of moisture when you first open the lid when it is done cooking. I guess the steam valve on the top of the lid is not so well designed and it doesn’t allow all the steam to scape properly, hence the condensation issue. Another issue i have found is that the delay timer timing is off by about 40 minutes, but now that i know that i just adjust my timing and that solves the problem. One thing i didn’t realize at first is the fact that the clock changes the time when you unplug the machine, so you have re-set the clock each time you unplug it or else your delay timer will be off as well. So yes, this machine has a few annoying flaws and manufacturing issues, but for me they were not so bad as to make me want to return it.

I use this to make scd yogurt where you need to incubate it at 110 degrees for 24 hours. The temperature does maintain at 110 degrees a couple of times i checked with a thermometer. The yogurt came out more sour than my usual method of wrapping a crock pot in towels and leaving it in the oven. I guess because this clay pot maintains a higher and more accurate temperature. The sourness problem is easily solved by changing the starter yogurt or culture. I tried both heating up the yogurt in the unit and let cool to 110 degrees and heating up on the stove top with a saucepan. Both methods produce similar yogurt. The one in the clay pot just takes about 5 hours for the whole process of heating and cooling while the stove top method can be done within an hour. I haven’t tried making other food with it yet because i’m always making a new batch of yogurt.

Com regarding the vitaclay products, mostly about how fragile the inner container is. I have decided to give it a try because of the potential benefit of a clay pot offers. The concept of having a clay pot in the multi-cooker intrigues me. For years, i have been told by my older family members that clay cooking are healthier for you plus the benefit of tasting better due to the porous nature of the material where heat and moisture circulates more evenly than other materials like stainless steel cookware. In some of the reviews i saw, i didn’t notice any aluminum on the bottom of the pot, i believed i have purchased a newer model so that problem has been solved.

The real reason i have nothing negative to write about this rice and slow cooker is because i had no expectations that it would be the same as the other non-stick surface rice cookers and slow cookers. I expected it to – be different – cook differently – and i expected it to – contribute to my general health. I have cooked brown rice, white rice, wild rice mix, oatmeal, beef stew, lamb stew, chicken fricassee, split pea soup, lentil soup, black beans,. I am completely satisfied with this ceramic cooker. It is true that there is a small amount of rice that always sticks to the bottom of the pot. The reason for this is that i wanted to get rid of the poisonous non-stick surface on my previous rice cooker. It is a very small amount of rice and it does not represent a large waste of food nor a large amount of money. My estimate is that it represents about $5. 00 a year if you cook rice almost every day as i do.

It did make legumes taste good. I used this for 2 1/2 years and didn’t have a problem with breaking the inner pot as it was always completely cooled before washing. As has been stated in other reviews, the lid is a bit difficult to remove when hot. Had to use tongs to take the lid off once cooking was complete; otherwise one would burn their hands. I used it primarily for legumes. Then the display quit working; would blink and i was unable to use it. Since the limited warranty was over; i changed to the instant pot pressure cooker of which i have two. Won’t replace this; as now i am more worried about possible contamination of the clay. It did make legumes taste good.

I really liked an idea of having a clay pot in the multi-cooker. Well, i have no regrets whatsoever that i gave it a chance. I love the delayed start option, with three toddlers it makes breakfasts much easier with hot cereal being ready by the time everybody gets out of their beds. Yesterday i’ve cooked enough cereal for two mornings and all i had to do today is to add milk ind put it for 30 sec in the micro, while last night i braised some fresh turkey, added diced veggies and whole grain pasta, and put the pot in the fridge. This afternoon i simply added some water and put it in the cooker for 30 minutes and the lunch was ready. The taste is great, i don’t have to think about it wile it’s cooking, i didn’t notice any aluminum on the bottom of the pot, as one of the reviewers mentioned, and another one said that she was concerned about the steam condensing on the aluminum cover and then going back to the food through the wholes in the clay lid – i’ve found an easy solution, i simply put a terry washcloth on top of the clay pot lid and it absorbs all of the moisture from steam. Some mentioned that it cooks too fast for the slow cooker.

I have not used it for soup or veggies, but i cannot imagine i would be disappointed. The only reason i gave it four stars (i wish i could give it 4. 5 stars) is how [insert bad word] expensive replacement parts are. You must know as a consumer their is one con to this product – its clay so it will break. I am careful when cleaning, but i read other reviews about it breaking, but my fiance did not (don’t let her see this). She broke the lid by not paying attention and it fell to the floor.
