Norton-Saint Gobain Abrasives 89507 Japanese-Type 4000 Grit Waterstone : As expected

Stone has to be lapped before using, but then you get very good stone. I am very satisfied with it and i recommend it.

I hesitated to buy norton stones because they are so much more expensive than others. But, the performance of this stone (and the 4000) is well worth the cost. I use 4000 and 8000 as the final steps after dmt diamond stones for the coarser steps.

I have some dull chipped knives. They just are not worth the cost to sharpen them. I had a chinese cleaver that was so dull, it was a paper weight. This stone is fantastic, especially for the price and size. Soak the stone for 15 minutes, then have plenty of water by you to keep both the stone and the knife wet. It’s the slurry that actually sharpens the knife. This is only for knives that have chipped edges or absolutely no edge at all like my cleaver. Take the time to watch some videos on youtube. There are a few different techniques shown, but my favorite was a guy speaking japanese but you could watch the movements he was making.

Basically a splash and go stone. Leaves a fine and clean polish. Great for straight razors and chisels as well. If you need a pre finishing stone, or even a finishing stone for your razors, this one will fill the bill.

To begin with, i am a complete novice with sharpening knives/tools however already have had some initial success with this item. I have used this (in conjunction with a 220 grit stone and combination 4000/8000 grit stone, both from norton as well) on my edc knife, a sog escape which is 9cr18mov steel, and can easily shave hair from my arms/legs (facial hair is a bit harder to do). I feel like this stone is definitely better than i am at this point, would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to try this out. I will try to upgrade this review once i’ve had a chance to use it with my recently purchased straight razor.

Norton-Saint Gobain Abrasives 89507 Japanese-Type 4000 Grit Waterstone for Fast Sharpening and Ultra Fine Finishes, Silicon Carbide/Aluminum Oxide Abrasives, 8″L x 3″W x 1″H, Blue Plastic Hinged Box : This is a nice fast cutting stone. It is consistant and is just as easy to maintain as any other waterstone. It is priced well and lasts as long as most other 1000 grit waterstones.

Talkin bout razor sharp, this will do it.

I use this for setting the bevel on razors and for general sharpening of kitchen/pocket knives.

Stone’s 220 grit wears fairly quickly. I had a number of plane blades that needed serious remediation, so i needed to re-flaten stone several times which was easily accomplished with a flat piece of honed granite, a reference square and some 220 sandpaper. I think the beauty of the waterstone sharpening really appears in the higher grit stones i. After the 4000 (where i initially stopped) under a magnifying glass you really can see how the scratches disappear and a true polished edge appears. Lee valley tool has a great reference article on the wear patterns and efficacy of different waterstone types, read it before you buy.

It is ok as far as cutting, but it will wear quickly and dish on you. It would be easier to use a flat plate and some sc sand paper instead.

I believe the fast wear of this stone is due to my poor, amateur technique. But i have no complaints of the amount of metal it is able to remove. Also, i use the norton flattening stone to flatten this stone and it works great. For all other grits of stone, i use silicone carbide sandpaper.

This stone is very good for deep nicks and taking small chips out of straight razor blades.

I have been using norton waterstones as a professional chef for 10 years now and hold them in the highest regard. I have the full set and find that they are durable, very consistant, and a joy to work with.

This norton 8000 grit is a good stone for just about anything. This stone came flat unlike my 4000 grit norton. It works great in a progressive stone set up for straight razors when you need a more gentle cutting and polishing action than diamond or other abrasive stones. It comes in a nice plastic case with rubber feet that works great in holding it still when in use. The stone is thick and should last a long time.

Used with an 8000 grit waterstone, and you can really hone a razor well; by itself, it will put a beautiful polished edge on chisels and knives.

A great stone and true to the grit.

It does what you bought it for. The price is about the same as other places and that’s about all you can say.

Got this to flatten chisel faces and shape chisel and plane bevels. Well, i just flattened 9 chisels in record time. My coarse diamond stone will now be used mostly for flattening my water stones. This stone cuts very fast and very well, but goodness does it wear quickly. It makes a huge messy slurry in no time, and if you flush that it cuts very fast. The only thing is that it seems to need flattening every couple of minutes of use. Make sure you have some way to flatten it or you’ll be putting curves in everything you try to shape. It’s worth it for the time it saves though.

This stone is very useful in getting a rough edge when your tool is harmed or if you need to get a different angle. I am pleased with it and found it much better than diamond stones that cost much much more.

This is a very good stone for sharpening chisels and plane blades. The size of the stone (3′ width and 8′ length) is great for plane blades. I have found smaller stones less effective to use. My only complaint is that the box was cracked and a small piece of the end had separated most likely in shipping. The box continues to serve as a base, but i use it carefully. My 5-star rating is for the stone exclusive of the box.

First off, i’ll say this product arrived as advertised, and performed well. I can’t really complain about the tool’s quality or other attribute. It did what its supoosed to do. However, i bought the stone to flatten chisels and plane irons. It worked, but the stone needed to be flattened – constantly. I used 220 grit sandpaper on a granite plate. I went through a lot of snadpaper keeping the stone flat. Half the reason i bought the stone was to redeuce the amount of sandpaper i was blowing through. I didn’t gain much in this regard. My only other option was to buy a coarse diamond stone to flatten the waterstone.

Very nice stone, cuts fairly quickly. Don’t store it in the box wet, it will grow an ugly pink mold, a different mold than the other stones. I soaked it in a diluted solution of bleach and that took care of it. I cut the top off and store it that way. If i am using them often, they go in a tote with a lid on, keeps them from drying out.

The Ultimate Edge 10N 10-Inch Standard Diamond Sharpening Steel – So-so

Work well with minimal effort.

Really good sharpens great last for quite awhile.

Worked great, did as i hoped. Coarse enough to sharpen my stainless knives, which are a pain to re-sharpen with fine sharpening steels.

I am writing a review after using this product for a few months now. Despite the self-proclaimed hype about sharpening knives, this steel does not work better than my other one from wushtof. The only thing i like better about this one is the fact that it is longer 12′ (compared to my 10′ wushtof). Also, this steel started to rust (yes, rust) at the top end near the plastic cap. Sorry, i wanted to like this but it definitely did not not meet my expectations from the other reviews and the product description.

Their was nothing to not like a out the product.

The diamond coating doesn’t last well.

  • Fastest Sharpener in the West and can be used on glass as well
  • Great edge tune up
  • works well but poorly built

It does the job and makes it easy to keep razor edges on my knives.

Though use to round vs oval, finally a coarse steel with great grit.

Very nice to resharpen knives.

Fine enough for honing and just coarse enough for all around sharpening. Plan to order other sizes and styles.

Edited 12/31/2011: my son has finished his apprenticeship, and he is now the head butcher in our local grocery store. He still uses this to sharpen his best knives. My son is apprenticing under the tutelage of a butcher, and his mentor recommended an oval sharpener. My son says it works well for sharpening the knives he uses during his workday.

This is the second purchase of this particular brand of sharpening steel. They do wear out after a while, but in comparison to other brands, this one seems to last and last. The 600 grit results in a fairly smooth cutting edge. I don’t use this diamond sharpening steel every time the knife dulls. Instead i use a metal sharpening steel to true the edge of blade. When that process no longer works to sharpen the knife, i then use the diamond sharpening steel to remove metal and put on a new edge. I’ve bought other diamond sharpening steels from amazon, but this is by far my favorite.

I gave this as a christmas present so i haven’t used it myself. The person to whom it was given was quite impressed with it.

I prefer the flat diamond steel over the round type; much faster blade restoration imo. I’m a personal chef and bought this to add to my traveling kit; it’s not as wide as the one i have at home but it does the trick. I do what one of my culinary school instructors taught me; every time i use my knife i give it 5 strokes on one side of the blade, then 5 on the other. Then 4, and 4; 3, and 3, etc.

I have inexpensive knives and this tool made them perform like those used by professional chefs. Only takes 6-8 passes to get a very sharp edge. Definitely makes cooking easier now.

Works just like it’s supposed to work. I’d definitely recommend it to a friend. Nice handle, puts a great edge on my knives.

I bought this for my husband for father’s day after he had used a friend’s. Thanks for carrying this item.

10 inch by 1/2 inch oval, 600 grit diamond

It was excellent and easy to use.

Inexpensive and easy to use. All my kitchen knives are now sharp as razors. After using it often for more than 10 years it takes a bit longer to obtain the edge i like so i just ordered a replacement.

I have lots of knives this works great, buy this rough one and just don’t push too hard to finish the job.

This is the first sharpener of this type for me. As with all sharpening getting right angle is important. The very fine diamond surface gives a good feel (feedback) so you can keep the angle more easily than with other sharpeners i have used. I just hope this thing lasts a while. Sometimes this sort of surface comes off too soon.

This product is awesome in my kitchen. This is the best knife sharpener out of all that i have owned. I actually bought three of them. Gave one to my boyfriend for christmas and kept the other as a spare for when i need a new one.

. This rod keeps my edges like razors. . I was somewhat disappointed with the quality of the materials used in construction. Everything from the plastic used in the handle to the grit itself. The entire piece just feels flimsy in your hand and i feel like if it slipped away from me and hit a hard floor it might break. The abrasive surface does an excellent job on my blades but for what little i use this piece, i already feel like it is wearing out and don’t expect this tool to last long. I don’t abuse it when i use it. I don’t want to be too negative.

Fits most standard knife blocks; made of microcrystalline diamonds bonded with nickel to oval steel shaft

I have used these for years in the kitchen and also for elk and deer hunting. The sharpener is small enough that you can carry it in the field when hunting and it also stores easily in the kitchen. I use only high quality knives and this sharpener keeps them razor sharp. I would recommend this to anyone who knows how to use a sharpening steel. The diamond works faster and better than any regular steel sharpener.

I have the fine edge sharpening steel and decided to buy this one. It definitely gets the job done and done well. I don’t know about the other ppl and them saying it doesn’t work. I’ll tell u this i’m a cook so i use my knife a lot and my coworkers all want to borrow it.

I cut meat for our local grocery store and know the importance of having a really sharp knife. I was told about the diamond sharpening steel by a coworker that had gotten his at ‘kiss the cook’ he paid $30 plus for his. Being on a tight budget right now due to rising gas prices i wasn’t able to go and buy the one he was telling me about so i searched amazon. I found this sharpener/steel and decided to try it. This item arrived today and immediately got out my work knives. The were super sharp in no time and it didn’t take much effort on my part at all. My arms will not get as sore now that i have the ability to keep my knives sharp. This sharpener is highly recommended.

Got this, a fine and a steel. Knives are so sharp you can shave with them. If you hate a dull knife as much as i do, i highly recommend them.

This is not sharpening steel, it is an amazingly convenient sharpener. Over the years i have used the laski system, hard and soft arkansas stones, but finally settled on a diamond stone/plate. When i saw this ‘steel’ i was intrigued. It is everything i’d hoped for. I run it under the water before each sharpening. When i am not happy with a knife, this steel is hanging right there. 10 seconds and the knife, big or little, is sharp again. As an additional benefit, the instructions noted that it can be used on glass.

Quick cutting – removes material fast — coarse edge is best on utility knifes.

Puts a great edge on some of my older knives. It’s a more aggressive steel which works well on knives that need to be re-edged.

Works with serrated knives; also files glass, crystal, and china

For the money, this sharpener works great and puts an incredibly sharp and lasting edge on all of my knives in a very short amount of time.

Already sharpened my knives and it is working great.

He was very happy to receive this knife sharpener and is very pleased with the results he gets when he uses it.

Very coarse fast cut which i wanted. You do need a finer grit to finish/touch up every day though. I also have one of these at my wood shop, much better than anything sold for woodworking on shaper knives.

Cook’s illustrated rated this sharpening steel as the best, and i think they’re absolutely correct. I have used this steel regularly for the past year or two, and my knives have never come close to staying this sharp before.

I use my knives every day and i don’t like them dull. If you want to remove a lot of metal, put on a bit of pressure and this sharpener will do the job. Barely touch the knife to the steel and stroke very gently to fine-tune. This performed better than i expected.

Lightweight, versatile and easy to use

I ordered 2 ultimate edges for friends since i already own myself. They used last elk season and were thrilled with how well and quick edge was brought back to life when skinning animals. Brings edge back with just a few swipes. I’ve carried and used for years as go to knife tune up when skinning elk or deer. It is always in my pack with knives for caring for game. One caution clean knife edge of meat or lard before touch up do to diamond surface will plug up with crud. Soap, water & sponge cleans diamond surface very well. One note if the cook of the house uses the sharpener you may need to buy 2 if you want one in back pack. I keep one in knife drawer at home, better than regular steel.

This is a tool i’ve been wanting for a while. I finally realized my flat stones and diamond sharpening plates wouldn’t enable me to sharpen all my knives, scissors, and such. This tool does and the cost was reasonable.

Treat it gently and it will reward you with sharp knives for a long time.

I used this item over the course of 1 week. It sharpens dull knives really quickly. Hope it last a reasonable time. Will review again in awhile. The ultimate edge 10nc 10-inch coarse diamond sharpening steel.

True diamond coated sharpener, fine enough, but for a razor edge,,,(to shave with) porcelain rods or the like will be needed to ‘hone’ a razor edge on your blade. This is a great sharpener though.

St. Gobain 24450 Japanese-Style 1000/4000 Grit Combination Waterstone, Aluminum Oxide, 8″ x 3″ x 1″ – A Great Sharpening Tool

Bought this for my son to use while away at school. It works as intended, and seems to be holding up well after about a year of use. Using it on carbon steel blades such as a morakniv (mora brand) makes quick work of returning the edge to razor-sharp. Stainless kitchen knives take a little more work, but you get the same results. This stone isn’t the quality of the finer japanese waterstones, but then it isn’t nearly as price either. If you are not a fanatic about sharpening you won’t be able to tell the difference. If you are a sharpening snob and have the money to spare you are not seriously considering this stone anyway. Good first waterstone or introduction to waterstone sharpening.

My husband is a woodworker and was looking for something to sharpen his chisels and this is just what he was looking for.

We had several knives that we had given up on. We got this waterstone due to a review i saw on a knife forum. My husband watched a you tube video and then took one of our cheapest knives and started to practice. I now use that old knife a lot . It takes a little time and practice to get the technique down but after that you will have all your friends asking you to sharpen their knives too.

Outstanding value and very good sharpening media. Having both 1000 and 4000 grit in one package is super handy.

Works great when i take the time to use it.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Cuts fast and leaves a clean finish!
  • It Makes My Knives Cut!
  • Nice stones for achieving a sharp edge on chisels and handplanes.

Excellent combination water stone. Remember that water stones are different (softer in my opinion) so you use them a little differently. I guess that’s a subtle distinction but this definitely puts a super sharp edge on all my knives.

I use this stone on my misono ux-10 knives. The 4000 grit does a quick job of putting an edge on these knives, and i would recommend purchasing a higher grit stone for finishing the edge, would have given it 5 stars but it arrived with numerous chips on its various corners and edges.

I am able to achieve very sharp edges on my hand planes and chisels. The product was very nice quality and hasn’t had any issue with dry storage. I flatten the stones periodically with a 400 grit diamond stone. Otherwise there isn’t any care. They work well with water and the subsequent slurry. There really isn’t much more to say. I would purchase this product again if i needed to.

The first one i got was chipped; returned to amazon and the 2nd was perfect. A couple of my knives had nicks. But it took a lot of patience. I’d get a courser grit (in addition to this stone) next time i work on knives that need tlc. Best advice was a) watch a few howto videos on youtube about using a waterstone; and b) get an angle guide. Holding the knife at a consistent angle is essential (and tough in the beginning).

Very easy to flatten with a coarse diamond plate and allows me to get all the way to 4000 grit on my plane blades which seems to be plenty sharp for what i do.

This wasn’t exactly want i wanted. I had intended on ordering the higher grits, 4k and 8k. However, this one was great and the wide area has allowed me to hone faster and more accurate blades. I will probably be ordering the higher one in the next few weeks anyway.

While i like the size of the stone and it arrived in good shape, both sides were not level and required lapping before use. In hindsight i could have ordered other cheaper stones with the same grit and saved $30.

This little stone is awesome and it takes a bit to get use to but once i did i was able to put a pretty good edge on all my knives. Just take your time try to keep the same angle and dont put a lot of pressure just let the stone do the work.

Stone works well and is a bargain compared to other stones. I like the way the coarse and smooth stones are glued together.

Bought these primarily to keep my sushi knives sharp but use it for all of my kitchen knives. Well made stones, reasonable price, and the case works great as a stand. Would highly recommend these to any one who likes to keep their knives sharp.

This stone cuts pretty aggressively for the finish that it leaves. This water stone doesn’t cut as fast as a diamond plate, but since the grit is finer it leaves a smoother finish. It cuts faster than a ceramic stone of equal grit, so you can remove small chips with the 1000 grit side and still have a relatively smooth finish. Take care that you don’t gouge the stone because it is softer and more prone to damage than just about anything else i’ve used, including arkansas natural stones and the previously mentioned ceramic stones and diamond plates. The 4000 grit side builds up quite a bit of slurry while you sharpen but cleans up quite easily and even after heavy use the surface rinses almost completely clean. After finishing with this stone i was able to achieve a polished edge fairly quickly using a loaded strop. Overall i am very pleased with results using this combination stone.

The stone is first rate, or would be if not for someone at amazon throwing it into an oversized box without any padding. After first use, the stone showed a series of hairline cracks from being banged around. Someone needs to explain to the shipping clerk the difference between a rock and a precision tool.

I suggest getting lower grit for shaping heavily miss shaped knives (really dull). But if you want to just get one stone this is a good buy. The carrying case doubles as a platform, that is a big plus.

This stone works very well in sharpening knives without taking a lot of metal off of the knife.

Perfect fit sharpening high end japanese knives.

I’m just learning how to sharpen on stones, so i wanted an affordable but decent stone set. This one was recommended to me by some chefs, and i’m really happy with it. There’s a learning curve, but i watched a lot of youtube videos, and now my knives (from a certain swedish warehouse) are super sharp. I’ve heard it’s easier to sharpen better knives, so i’m happy this stone was able to get a good edge on a cheaper blade. I maintain the edge on a ceramic honing rod, and it’s still good after two months.

The Ultimate Edge 10W 10-Inch Gourmet Oval Diamond Sharpening Steel – Excellent Sharpening Device

There’s nothing more dangerous in a kitchen than a dull knife. With this ‘bit ‘o kit’ you could put an edge on the edge of a brick. Manufacturer got it right, seller also gets a nod of the head. Ordered and on my door step in 3 days.

True diamond coated sharpener, fine enough, but for a razor edge,,,(to shave with) porcelain rods or the like will be needed to ‘hone’ a razor edge on your blade. This is a great sharpener though.

GATCO Sharpeners Gatco 10005 5-Stone sharpening system – Works good.

With the ‘easy grip, clamp mount’, it is convenient to use at a table. (for larger knives, attach to a short piece of shelving for a more stable base. )the kit contains all of the stones necessary to take a kitchen knife to razor sharp. After the initial sharpening, only 2 stones are necessary to re-sharpen that edge. I received my kit with one of the tabs broken in the box that holds the stones in place. The vendor (picnic world) contacted me to see if everything was okay with my order. I replied about the broken tab and that i thought it was the factory’s fault, not the vendor. The vendor contacted the factory and the factory supplied a replacement that the vendor forwarded to me. Great customer service on the part of the factory and the vendor.

I have struggled with using a regular stone to sharpen my knives, it seems to take a skill that i dont possess. This kit makes it really easy to keep the right angle and get an incredibly sharp blade. It takes a little be of time to get it right, but once you do it it leaves the blade super sharp.

Takes a little practice but sharpens well.

This gives way better results than using a wet stone.

Wanted to take the next step and get some of my old blades back up to snuff. Decided to try out this kit and have not been disappointed. Even a few old work knives that i use for gardening (read: dull as a brick from years of digging around roots) could be re-profiled and an edge put back on. The blade holder is a bit hinky. Some blades are hard to keep seated and the two shallow angle will hit the holder with the stone without touching the blade on smaller blades. After re-profiling a few thicker blades with the coarsest stone i will definitely be picking up a diamond stone for that job. The coarse stone works, just takes forever. Overall i’d recommend this for a novice, with an understanding of the limitations i’ve found. Puts a wicked edge back on your old blades.

Just like my old one bought almost 30 years ago.

  • Great kit. I have struggled with using a regular
  • better than the competition
  • I like it

My son-in-law was very pleased with christmas gift.

Pros:-after modifications, it really does get my folding knives ‘shave’ sharp – so sharp that it’s almost evil. So sharp that it’s actually scary to open the blades on my folding knives. -the coarseness graduation works very well, and is useful for re-shaping new knives. Cons:-i had to use a metal file to shave down the top edges of the aluminum clamp. For anything that requires 19 degrees or less, the stones will cut into the clamp, and the pores fill up with aluminum making the stones useless. This is a design flaw and not unique to my usage of the product. -i added marker points with a black magic marker to the stone rods because you never know exactly how far to pull them out from the stones. Something like this should be done at the factory. -opening the plastic box: kinda nit picking here, but i imagine few people have a hand large enough to open the box with one hand. To open it, i turn the box so the front faces away from me, and then use two hands to get the top open.

Got this set with the thought of trying to put a useful edge on my non-matching collection of 30 year old, cheapest you can get, kitchen knives. After a little bit of a learning curve, this set began to work very well for what i wanted. Except, for the amount of metal i had to remove to get past pits and dings and rust, i should have gone with the diamond. This set worked, but it took quite some time. I will also say that, this set doesn’t get super fine grit. More than enough for my kitchening needs, but nothing like shaving sharp. Unfortunately, after only a couple knives done, i made the mistake of working the next knife before the family went to bed, and turning my head to answer a question, i dropped the coarsest stone on the tile floor and the glue holding the stone popped off. So the set is now just about useless for the rest of my knives, as i have too much re-profiling of edges to do to make any headway without that stone. Also, these stones are very thirsty, yes. But i found them to work well when treated correctly.

Great sharpener works great and is quick, very easy to use. Instructions are very easy to read. Wish the clamp was a bit better but thats all.

The packaging from amazon was bad. The product was allowed to slide around in the box. Thankfully it came in its own hard case and that was not damaged at all. My brother knows a lot more about these things than i do and he wanted this item. That is good enough for me to say it is worth buying.

I have to admit i was looking at the expensive $160. 00 sharpeners and read the 4 reviews for this item. They all claimed that it was great so i figured i would give it a try. Initial reaction when i first opened the box was. This looks like a pile of junk2. After reading the directions: i got swindled. This looks like a pile of junk3. After using it for the first time: wow.

Guides are to short, and the stones are soaking up the oil like sponges. This is not like the one i purchased in the 1980’s and loved.

This product works well for me; i’ve had it for around 15 years. I’d suggest the following improvements:1. Like others have found, the case is hard to open. The colored handles on the stones are a bit too small to get a good grip. Also, the grip texture is quite lacking once they and your hands get oily. It’s hard to read the angle labels on the clamp. Instead of the numbers being raised, they should be recessed.

Does just what it says it will dois hard to keep knife in the jig sometimes but for the most part it works goodmight get another one once i can figure out how to use the clamping jig better.

I’ve been using this set for 20 years and it’s fantastic. I like to keep my knives razor sharp and like new. This makes it easy and prevents ruining knife edges from free handing it.

Well it sharpens very very well but is a little slow to use. The sharpening stone is pretty narrow so it takes a bit of patience but it does sharpen to a razor edge.

Comes with angle clamp

I was tired of buying sharpening kits. I purchased an electric that works ok but not good enough. This sharpener takes more effort but does a nice job of sharpening knives. There is some skill involved but common sense will tell you everything you need to knowi would recommend this product.

Like this product because the stones are wider than the other brand. That being said, a narrower stone may work better for a small blade such as a pen style pocket knife.

Overall, this is a good knife-sharpening system. It has everything you need for a range of blades, all in one case. This system tries so hard to address a range of edges that it doesn’t do the extremes very well. I bought this system for sharpening kitchen knives of various sizes and uses. It doesn’t work well on the finer blades, as they slip around and the angle doesn’t stay consistent. As well, on the larger blades, longer knives, the angle doesn’t seem to stay consistent with them, either. The premise of aligning the rods in the notches for the precise angle is a great idea, but it still doesn’t compensate for variance in knife styles. Generally speaking, the system is a bit awkward to use. There is no external lock or fastener. Rather, it’s opened by pressing against the lid edge, and an inner catch is released. It takes a bit of maneuvering with both hands to get the case open. Sharpening seems to work best with mid-sized blades that aren’t terribly long, in terms of stability, consistency of filing, and ability to equally reach the full length of the blade. Smaller and larger knives, the clamp is tedious to secure, the rods aren’t long/stable enough, and the guide angle gets lost closest to the knife point.

Did a fine job sharpening a dull knife, but the stones are difficult to keep clean. Maybe its just my ignorance, but i can’t get the buildup off the stones. This seems to reduce the effectiveness, but overall it is a good product. In hindsight, i might have bought the diamond stones. Only because i don’t think they have the buildup problem.

For the past five years l have been a treenware carver(wooden spoons mostly) and have come to appreciate the value of a truly sharp knife. This system has provided me with a fast, safe, and easy way to keep my knives sharp as a razor. I bought the accessory holder for the system and have mounted it on a board which l then clamp to the table edge. This gives me the freedom to use both hands as l want and actually speeds the sharpening process. One caution: don’t brag about the system or you could end up being the ‘go-to-guy’ for all friends needing a sharp knife.

Works like a charm, probably too well for my clumsy hands. Made my knife sharp, keeps it sharp.

Includes honing oil

For the past four years i have used my hunting buddy’s sharpening system. I finally decided to buy my own, and it is as good as they get. The day after i bought mine, i brought the sharpening system to work. About four other knives were sharpened that day. Just the other day i used the sharpening system on my machete. Suffice to say, it got scary sharp. I definitely recommend this sharpening system.

The first knife i sharpened was my fishing filet knife. It put a razor sharp edge on it. It was a bit time consuming to use and the base i purchased along with it helped greatly, but you must screw it down to the bench when using it. Negatively speaking, this sharpener can only sharpen one side of the blade at a time. Then you have to flip it over in its base and sharpen the other. Not too big of a deal but it does upset the rhythm you create once you begin sharpening. Would be nicer if you could sharpen both sides simultaneously like the sharpener sold by wicked edge. A bit pricy, but the best and last sharpener you will ever buy. A friend of mine bought it and says it is unbelievable and sooooo easy to use. You can even sharpen your razors with it.

A good sharpening system for most knives. Smaller knives with narrow blades such as boning and pocket knives are not easily sharpened because the clamp cannot hold the blade without slipping. There is a slot to clamp these narrow blades but it is also too narrow to hold the blade if any force is necessary to sharpen the blade. If you insert the blade further into the clamp the sharpening stone contacts the clamp itself and you end up filing off the edge of the clamp. This is not a disaster but it does not get your knife sharpened. If you work carefully, most kitchen knives, hunting knives, etc. Do not expect the edge you would get on top quality german or japanese cutlery that has a polished edge. A polished edge can be produced if you add additional finer surfaced stones and a strop.

Follow the directions and you’re all set. As you would expect with precision equipment, its not designed for 6th graders. My 15 yr old is sharpening everything in sight and doing a fine job, too. Best edges on my sabatiers since i bought them.

This is not a bad set, i had to pick it vs the other option i wanted because of shipping constraints. The case is poor, and the guide rods are too short depending on the knife and angle. Also they are not reversible on the stones. Be sure to add an ultra fine stone, the fine stone is still rather coarse for finish work.

Not accurate in maintaining correct angle.

This is my go to sharpening system. It has all the angles and is so simple to use ( directions are printed on inside of case)the gatco 10005 5-stone sharpening system really gets the knives in my household sharp. I use number 25 for my pocket knife that i carry with me everywhere and it gets it as sharp as a razor ( i show my buddies how sharp my knife is by shaving some hairs from my arm)this is my choice for sharpening, it’s simple to use and gives you consistent results every timei also love the fact that it has a stone in there for sharpening serrated blades ( no oil to be used on them)i would for sure recommend this product to anyone really serious about having sharp knives.

Includes custom caring case with instructions

I have tried many different knife sharpening systems and this is the first one that actually works. I took our old dull kitchen knives (which were exspensive to begin with) and was able to put a razor sharp edge back on them. I thought i was going to have to buy new knives and this set saved me a bundle. It took three passes because they were really dull but it worked great. I was also able to put a new edge on my pocket and hunting knives on the first pass. I haven’t tried it yet on serrated knives, but i have no doubt it will work.

I sit at my desk, watch youtube and sharpen my knives.

Gatco 5-stone sharpening system – no more should be said. Ordered extra clip to mount on workbench.

A cookbook i just got recommended this sharpener right when i was contemplating taking my 20 plus year old whusthof knives to be professionally sharpened. I read the reviews– the consensus was that this worked great and was well worth the relatively cheap price. I bought this kit along with the grip device the was also recommended. I sharpened all my knives in about 30 minutes, and that included figuring out what i was doing. The first thing i sliced was a tomato– like butter. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase.

Comes with extra coarse, coarse, medium, and fine sharpening stones. As well as a stone for sharpening serrated blades. Was able to sharpen all sizes of blades without an issue everything from small pocket knives to large kitchen knives. Just follow instructions it comes with or watch one of their five minute videos on youtube. It gave perfect sharp edge every time. If doing many knives at once can get a little tiring holding the clamp so recommend putting it in a vice or purchasing their handle made for sharpener. If your having trouble with the clamp or your blade is not coming out right your doing something wrong. Follow instructions and it’s very easy to use. Don’t have to apply a super amount of pressure when sharpening either.

Comes with angle clamp

Gatco makes the best clamp for this type of guided sharpener. I do wish the rods were longer, though.

This is the best sharpener i have used, and i have used several. I like the rods attached to the stones, i like the multi positional guides, i like the large stones. So far i have only one reservation and that is how it grabs the knife. That takes some adjusting to get it just right. A little bit better grip on the clap would be nice, like the fluted edge on a vice, maybe. All in all, though this one does it best.

diamondLife 4 Way Diamond Knife Sharpener Hone Sharpening Stone New : I have two Yoshi ceramic knifes that had some nicks

It may not be up top the same quality as the more expensive diamond sharpeners, but for the money (and if you buy it at harbor freight you can get it for ten bucks) this is a fantastic tool. I used it for flattening the bottoms of planes, spokeshaves, and similar tools, for flattening the backs of chisels, and for sharpening all manner of cutting tools. It cuts very fast, requires no lubricant, and gives great results. It’s hard enough to regrind the chipped edge on a spring tempered knife, like my flexcut carving knives. I’m not sure that i’d use it on a very expensive japanese chisel- i’d use a waterstone there- but for 95% of my sharpening tasks it’s great.

Asked a metal worker about what was best to use and he had one just like this and suggested it to me. Price for use ratio is spectacular.

I’ve been using one for several years and will probably buy a new one. It’s surprisingly effective for getting a good edge. I’ve used mine on kitchen knives, jack knives, and garden tools, and it’s still effective.

I have two yoshi ceramic knifes that had some nicks in them. I was able to take out the nicks and get them back in to working order.

  • This is a fantastic tool for maintaining your expensive knives. And it’s safe to use.
  • This is my 2nd
  • It is perfect for kitchen knives and pocket knives

My husband uses it all the time for sharpening various kinds of knives and he gets them super sharp.

Very thin abrasive surfaces.

Works great and fast and fairly resanoble.

My husband uses this to sharpen all his knives. It is perfect for kitchen knives and pocket knives.

I’ve been using this sharpener for months and have turned all our kitchen knives to razors. They are a pleasure to use now. If i wear it out i’m getting a new one.

Super sharp knives and loved sharpening them. Far better than stones and oil. If you love and need sharp knives this is essential. I cook everyday and sharp knives are nothing less than the standard.

A little cumbersome to use but if you put the time into it, it will work.

If used correctly, will remove deep burrs and restores your knife to a condition that will allow it to be sharpened to a razor sharp edge.

Works great have sharpen all my knives.

Have only used it a few times but looks like it will work well.

Having tried diamond various diamond hones in the past, i was looking for a good set of hones for my kitchen knives. Most particularly i was looking for a super fine grit hone for the final sharpening stage. Most of the hones i found cost upwards of forty dollars for a single grit or were too small to be useful on large knives. This set seemed to fit the bill perfectly and at a reasonable price. When i got it home, i tried it out on my best butcher knife and got a really good edge in a very short time. Within a days time i had a sharp edge on all my kitchen knives and even on all my scissors. I was even able to resharpen a used #11 exacto knife blade. I used the 200 grit side to quickly remove all nicks then used the 300, 400, and 500 grit sides to get a progressively finer edge. I then stropped the blades on a piece if leather charged with white diamond rouge. Finally, i tested the edge by using it to shave the hairs off the back of my hand.

I have had an earlier version of this for years. My adult grandson voiced an interest in knife sharpening so i gave him this. He is very pleased with it and learning the art of a fine edge.

Tuned up my benchmade folder in no time @ all.

Works great – easy to use in the stand or easy to hold in your hand.

This product was everything advertised, and is just what i was looking for. It functions just as expected, and is very handy to use.

I’ve been using diamond devices for sharpening my own set of 37 knives (yes, i’m a knife freak) for some 15 years. I purchased this 4 way diamond knife sharpener hone sharpening device for my oldest daughter. I had given her a diamond ‘steel’ some 10 years ago, but i had noticed while visiting that it had not been used as often as it should have been. When i decided to purchase her a set of three flat ‘diamond stones’ i found this product. I was going to visit them and had the unit shipped to her address with my name. When i got to her home, she gave me the package and i handed it back to her telling her that it was hers. After she opened it, she stated that it was similar to the diamond stones i keep with my knives, but she had always been afraid to use the flat set i have. After i sharpened three of her knives i told her to then sharpen five more in her set. She was amazed at how easy it was to sharpen her knives and not damage herself or her knives. Both she and her husband were quite happy and somewhat amazed at how easy sharpening their knives were to finish.

Best sharpener i’ve ever usedlove it.

Sagana Kitchenware Whetstone – Two-sided Sharpening Stone – 1000 / 6000 Grit, Best Sharpener I’ve Ever Purchased

My 1st stone and it has been good for me so significantly. The 6000 grit facet does don definitely rapidly but general it was a excellent entry amount stone.

I have only utilized it at the time considering the fact that i bought it, but it set a excellent edge on my knife. It shipped in really safe packaging, to make certain it did not split in transit. And they ensured me that if it experienced they would immediately substitute it. It comes with a bamboo base, i am not use to that and eradicated it 50 % way by means of sharpening, but that’s just particular preference. The base is really good and will come with a rubber brace. I undoubtedly counsel this stone.

This stone is good for little positions. The wood base must be held dry and clean up (need to breathe) if not it gets smelly and rotten.

Comments from buyers

“Works as described, perfect for the home chef, The stone does a great job, but it came with a small chip, If This Is Your First Time Using a Whetstone, Don’t Be Intimidated!”

Arrived rapidly, nice match and finish.

This was my 1st time working with a whetstone–and i love it. I’ve received some really outdated knives (from a rental house, in all probability not sharpened in numerous, a lot of yrs) that i assumed may be beyond preserving. My father uses an electric powered sharpener, which frequently is effective fairly nicely, but did nothing at all for these particularly dull knives. So i did some research and determined to check out this whetstone. Was not certain how tough it would be, given that i have zero practical experience with knives, sharpening knives, etcetera. , but just after viewing the online video i observed it incredibly quick, form of exciting (in a meditative, zen way) and really, very powerful. I uncovered that just after just a several minutes, i form of obtained the feel for it, and started to be much more relaxed with how to sharpen and with being aware of when i was completed. I have also just registered for some pretty particular knives for my wedding, and am so happy that now i am going to know how to treatment for them. This whetstone is also incredibly beautiful, and i could not be additional pleased. I can not hold out for my knives to dull, so that i can use this again.

It arrived on time and perfectly packaged. The bamboo base appears to be like wonderful compared to other stones in about the exact selling price vary. It feels awesome to use and isn’t going to choose a prolonged time to soak (generally thanks to the substance). I only have on insignificant difficulty – the rate. I cannot say if it is really a fantastic stone or not – i am going to see in a few yrs – but there are other reduced priced selections created of the precise very same substance. The only variation is they you should not look as good. If you care extra about appears to be than saving a couple bucks, purchase absent.

I gained it just as explained and it is effective as superior, if not much better than i hoped.

My knives are now razor sharp, many thanks to sagana whetstone. I am totally happy with it.

Uncomplicated to use, youtube online video guidance were being good, solution is high top quality and my knives are amazingly sharp.

A truthful price for one thing that can continue to keep knives honed so properly. The stand is good that i can soak the stone & sharpen my knives at my desk amongst night journaling. The 6000 grit is great to be equipped to get a superior reflection on my scandi-grind mora blade.

Arrived in best problem, and worked completely.

I managed to resurrect a cheap knife from heading in the rubbish by investing some time on it. Watch any of the a lot of films out there on how to use a sharpening stone and you will be undertaking this in no time. I soaked the stone in a container of water right away. The base is pleasant, nothing truly moved as i was using this on my counter. Nevertheless, it does make a lot of mess as you are applying it. I wound up placing some damp paper towels underneath as i was sharpening as this saved it amount (a rag or towel wound make as well a lot unevenness). This also caught most of the water that was coming off the stone. I held a damp towel close by to wipe up the blade just about every so usually. I stored the container of drinking water close by so i could wash the blade.

Arrived effectively-packaged, no breaks, all intact and as the images show. The stone works incredibly, considerably superior than the cheapo i acquired right before from the area shop. Would invest in once more as a gift for friends.

The video clip offered quite precious schooling.

Stone seems to be of higher excellent. Utilized it only one particular time so far.

The stone does a very good career, but it came with a smaller chip. I would have given the item 5 stars but it has broken piece on the aspect. I have no choice but to retain it since i have to have it. Updatethe seller contacted me about the broken stone and settled the problem. Wonderful solution and even superior client service.

Pleasant high quality and the on-line instruction online video is handy and quick.

Will get my pocket knives razor sharp.

Received the product or service as requested and in a timely manner. I sharpened 50 % my knives and this stone(s) supplied the cleanest and sharpest edge of all of my stones. Would remarkably endorse this merchandise.

Effectively well worth the $$$$ to retain your knives razor sharp and ready for the lower. I suggest this stone for the sagana sushi knife.

Great stone functions as predicted.

My knives are finally sharp. Up coming i am obtaining the 8000 for an even sharper stage.

When this initially arrived the wooden base experienced damaged. I contacted the vendor and they immediately despatched me a alternative which arrived in great problem. I watched the online tutorial which i uncovered truly useful and then established out to sharpen a few of knives. I have to say i’m thrilled with the results.I have tried using working with other sharpening procedures above the previous several yrs and none of them have sharpened my knives like the sagana whetstone has. I immediately established out to cut some meat and veggies for a recipe and the knives reduce as a result of the food like butter. I’m unbelievably impressed and remarkably recommend this sharpener. I’ve wasted revenue on other sharpeners in the earlier that haven’t labored practically as perfectly.

They got below quick and the place just what i was looking for.

This stone is a wonderful funds entry into fine grain finishing stones for honing. For the price tag it is terrific and operates as anticipated. As lots of folks have complained about the grit of this stone. Do your investigation, all new stones ought to be soaked and lapped right before initial use, this goes for any grit of stone. There is indeed a big big difference in the sense of this stone even though clean out of the box compared to soon after it has been adequately lapped for very first time use. Also don’t forget ending stones will not need hulklike force to do their task.

We definitely are happy with our obtain. We would enjoy directions for the survival wallet established also. My son would really like to place this in his go bag.

Bought it currently and i will have to say, it is a incredibly wonderful stone. This is best of the line as significantly as i am concerned. Pretty perfectly designed and it comes with a nonslip rubber holder to us when sharpening instruments , knives, and razor’s. This is ten,000 grit and will place a pretty sharp edge on anything you have to have it for. It is not for serrated knives or scissors. It does a incredibly fine work on straight razors which is what i will use it for to get a super sharp edge. The kinds that i use now are just not undertaking a good plenty of position so i determined to move it up a little bit and get a finer grit stone. Thank’s for a wonderful merchandise.

Just what the medical doctor ordered. This is a top quality stone to learnteach the shed artwork of sharpening and retaining a straight razer.

King Two Sided Sharpening Stone : A great water stone for finishing off my woodworking tools and kitchen knives

I am very content with the overall performance of this h2o stone. There is a obstacle when finding out how to sharpen no cost hand, but after you get a procedure in position that is effective for you, drinking water stone sharpening can be extremely pleasing and produce great results. I figured out about the king model of stones from master blade smith, murray carter. Murray strictly utilizes the one thousand and 6000 grit king stones when sharpening and suggests king brand name thanks to their outstanding benefit for the cash. He also teaches to stick with these grits every time so that you can come to be consistent with your sharpening and know what to count on. If the edge of your knife is in awful problem and needs lots of work, has deep chips and many others. , then you may perhaps need to go down in grit, but for standard sharpening, the 1000 grit operates beautifully high-quality. Also, the natural beauty of starting up off with 1000 grit, especially with newcomers, is the actuality that it gradually eliminates steel and leaves the consumer area for mistake. I have sharpened a number of pocket knives, a kitchen area knife and my straight razor with this stone.

Served a total sharpener n00b get his knives sharp. Overall novice sharpener reporting in here. I had procured a tri-hone 3 stone combo sharpener from a neighborhood retail outlet below and gave it my most effective attempts. And while i could make an apparent enhancement more than a really incredibly dull and chipped blade i could not ever get them what you would phone ‘sharp. ‘ i purchased myself a small selection of wusthof typical kitchen area knives past yr and they had been all pretty uninteresting by now from a 12 months of abuse and a chopping board that was way too challenging. Following paying out a great hour sharpening with both equally stones and following the instructions to the letter i obtained them very sharp. That currently being claimed, they’re not razors, and i know they were sharper when new. With any luck , far more observe and i can get them back to remaining the certainly great work of artwork they had been when new. The angled element of the blade down to the slicing area is now a really noticeable almost mirrored like overall look, and seems to be the section of a definitely sharp blade. In all actuality, it truly is not fairly as sharp as i might like, but i’m chalking that up to my very own skillset.

A terrific clasic all all over basic combo stone. I am a kosher slaughterer and i use these stones to sharpen and polish my 18′-20′ knives. My knives should be sharp plenty of to reduce by means of a cows cover and neck and clean as glass all at the exact same time although slaughtering about 200 animal a day. This is no simple undertaking and calls for only the best top quality of stones. You can be sure that i exam these stones less than the most demanding of environments. What can i say this, stone is a basic and presents a great amount of effectiveness even though however currently being reasonably priced for most consumers. I have personally come to use the shapton one thousand glass in conjunction with a king 6000 stone and if you want better high-quality i would advocate accomplishing that but this is a genuinely great all all over stone that will demonstrate correctly ample for most users.

Good stone if you know what youre undertaking. . This is a fantastic stone for the price that you get it for. I adore possessing two different grits on 1 stone. Some record this as a con because it will certainly not previous as extended as 2 individual stones, but i can not imagine sharpening so many knives, so usually that i would put on this just one out. The one thousand grit works great to get your blades to a utility edge. Meaning its high-quality for just about just about anything in a regular kitchen area. The 6000 grit will get down to closer to a razors edge and polishes and hones the blade. It is awesome and heavy and does not go about. It has the very little plastic stand to sit it on, but it really isn’t even necessary. I could see the stand breaking at some point.

Operates quite properly, will invest in again. . Stone performs great, following a several basic sharpening tutorials on youtube i’ve managed to clear up several kitchen area knives quite effectively. I would acquire this again or advise it for any one who was on the lookout for a first rate sharpening stone. Only grievance is that the decreased grit facet is from time to time just barely coarse ample to start a very boring knife, you could want to commit in a third, much more coarse stone for people severe cases in addition to this 1.

King Two Sided Sharpening Stone with Base – #1000 & #6000 : Amazing product but came with a chip. 5 out of five starsas a professional chef i was beyond impressed with the quality of the stone. By the end of the day my full knife kit was sharpened like i had just walked out of a william sonoma. The only reason why this isn’t at 5 stars is because it came with a chip in the corner. I can’t say that this isn’t really because of the manufacturer but simply the way our postal service works when it comes to handling packages. However, newspaper or some kind of stuffing should have been able to prevent this. Other than that i am extremely satisfied with my purchase. I would highly reccomend this to all of my friends and coworkers.

I would have offered 5 stars if there experienced of been a smaller bottle that came with the kit that could be applied to maintain h2o for the stones. It retains up well if you know how to use and treatment for it. Sharpening with a stone ( actually a series of stones ) is not all-natural. To use one particular you need to readup on a couple of world-wide-web posts on knife sharpening. I use a small grit, say 600-800 to get the shape and bevel right and carry the edge down to a tough sharp. This is great for an axe, but, not a knife. After the bevel and most of the boring edge has been ground down ( no light-weight displays off the cutting edge ) transfer to the 1000 grit stone. At one thousand grit you will remove a good deal considerably less product , but all you are immediately after is to get the scratches off the bevels and refine the edge a minimal more. When the edge is sharp sufficient to slash notebook paper with out snags it is time for the 6000 grit stone.

Terrific combination for my kitchen area knives. . I have absent nuts with this issue. I have sharpened each and every knife in the kitchen except the steak knives with this awesome combo. The 1000 grit (brown side) is ideal for sharpening up uninteresting knives and the 6000 grit (beige side) polishes the edge to a really reflective, nearly mirror complete. On the other hand, this combo is not fantastic for an really dull edge or for a blade that requirements to be re-profiled. It is achievable to bit by bit re-profile with the one thousand grit, but for me it was an arduous and eventually wasteful job. I finished up obtaining a 400/800 grit norton instrument sharpening stone from home depot for the knife i had to re-profile. In conclusion, i am really glad with this combo king stone, it does what it’s supposed to do. I sharpen my knives at fifteen levels a aspect on one thousand then 6000, then i strop carefully with a paddle-backed leather strop and stropping compound from bark river (not on amazon). This final results in crazy sharp knives.

Acquiring my knife stoned :-). For sharpening knives, there is no greater approach of sharpening that i am informed of when completed adequately. The knife’s edge remains sharp a extended time when it is performed thoroughly. I have received it accomplished the right way and one particular knife that i use pretty much each day lasts for 6 months. Just one caveat is that i use a right cutting board, and i will not abuse the knife. I do not minimize bones and i do not do that fast chopping movement with the knife blade slamming into the cutting board. If you think about a knife’s edge that has a incredibly thin edge (about 20 microns depending on the supply of the data) that is fragile and i cringe when the movie star chef’s do that. It is recognized, and they can afford to sharpen and replace their knives. My knife will provide me the rest of my lifetime. As for sharpening and my skill level the one thousand/6000 is the place i like to be.

I have been obsessed with knives considering that i was five. I was essentially suspended from 2nd grade for a lunch recess knife clearly show at lassen perspective elementary. In any case, my obsession has progressed into sharpness. My goal is to have a knife so sharp, i can reduce a single slipping hair folicle in 50 %. I tried some diamond sharpeners. I considered they were sharp, but small did i recognize. I put in a couple weeks in a dojo located in safari @ youtube, in which a learn japanese knife sharpener tought me disapline, patience, and in the end how to tackle and stroke hand cast metal. Grasp yumogotogo relentlessly repeated his training @ 50mbps. He eventually recommended the king stone, as i am not prepared for serious japanese grit. Tiny did master yumogotogo know, i researched his stokes in fantastic element. The consequence, an extremely sharp metal by lodge assortment. I consider i have attained the sharpness i attempt for. Having said that, i can in no way come across the hair after i stroke it with lightning speed.

Mine arrived chipped at two corners far too. But it doesn’t impact sharpening, so i determined to continue to keep it. Amazon needs to consider superior safety for fragile goods when they ship. This is a sharpening stone not different from other sharpening stones, so you really don’t want instruction. Even so, it really is less difficult for us to use it appropriate if instruction is incorporated. I think the maker doesn’t intend to export their solutions abroad, so only instruction published in japanese is incorporated. Here is the english translation:1. Soak it in water for about 3 minutes in advance of use. Sharpen both equally sides for double edged knives. Sharpen only one particular aspect for one edged knives. Just after sharpening, the little piece referred to as ‘kaeri’ is fashioned alongside edges. To repair this, frivolously sharpen the other facet for 2-3 instances (strokes). Note: be incredibly watchful when you test kaeri. Will not rinse dirty drinking water though sharpening. If the area of the stone come to be uneven, wrap a piece of wooden with #100 sand paper or drinking water-resident paper and make it flat. Watered flat floor of concrete will work as very well. Immediately after use, rinse it totally. Stay clear of direct sunshine light-weight and dry it. If your knife is chipped, you really should commence with #four hundred sharpening stone, then move on to this products.

This product will sharpen virtually anything which include the brain. Knives, and everyday living had been uninteresting at my house until eventually i discovered out about a single of japan’s solution treasures, this stone. Sharp knives are at complete capability in my dwelling so now i truly feel it is really time to activate my inner ninja (all guys have internal ninjas and they find out it by age five) and use my swift sword to avenge my family’s honor. Initial i will have to invest in a sword even though. Spouse will not understand suppressed inner ninja spirits and will not likely concur to my invest in of a hand created sword. For now i will practice with out sword but as quickly as i get it i will undoubtedly sharpen it with this stone. ****will not sharpen cheddar**.

With a little exercise knives will be sharper than they at any time have been. Does what it should really – sharpens a dulled knife you can shave with in 20-30 minutes. It takes a very little practice but if you can fry and egg without the need of breaking the yolk then you’ve received the potential to use a wet stone and get superior success. Under no circumstances experienced substantially luck with stones in the previous and have relied on a metal. Soon after seeing youtube and supplying it a try – perfection. Essential to applying a stone i received from 1 of the vids is look at the bevel on the knife. The a thousand is to even up the bevel and take all the microchips and irregular serrations off the edge then the 6000 polishes the it. Soon after ending with 1000 it seems like brushed nickel with even bevel and correctly straight reducing edge and soon after the 6000 it should really search like chrome.

It is a device, and you have to understand how to use it but if you acquire the time it is perfectly worth the effort and hard work. . The moment you determine out how to use it, you will like it. Are not able to realize why there are no english directions. You can find lots of movies on youtube but you have to glance for them. I usually takes about one hundred strokes on each and every facet of the blade to get a wonderful edge, then about 20 on every facet to polish the edge with the clean facet of the stone. The base is wonderful, you soak the stone till water stand on the surface and is not absorbed. I utilised it on twenty five yr outdated sabatier established of knives and they are great now.

The stone operates quite effectively, shipping was poor. The packaging was weak and my stone arrived chipped. I would check your get cautiously mainly because there was not significantly padding about the stone. I can get a sharper edge with this stone then i have been equipped to working with issues like dmt diamond sharpeners. There is some thing to these japanese stones.

I used to use the ‘scary sharp’ technique. Having said that, i identified myself paying a great deal of cash on damp dry sand paper and 1-five micron paper can be up to $2. Not to point out the tape, plate glass, spray adhesive and the mess. When i obtained this king comb stone, i soaked it in h2o in accordance to directions. The very first time i applied it, i realized i would by no means go back again. Immediately sharpens plane blades in no time. You do have to ‘true’ it occasionally. But the uncomplicated of use and the quality of the edge it hones is unbelievable.

Razor sharpness at your disposal. This stone will allow for you to do just that. I handle to deliver my kitchen area knives to the state where you can simply dry shave with’em. I see some persons are offering this stone 3 or 4 stars since it won’t be able to be utilized to reprofile a chipped edge. That’s not actually the stone’s fault, it really is additional the people today who usually are not seasoned with sharpening knives. To reprofile a chipped or damaged edge you require a grit lessen than one thousand (300-600-800). The one thousand/6000 can be employed to bring a uninteresting knife with an (virtually) intact edge to razor sharpness but for weighty obligation reprofiling, clearly it is just not suitable. You can do it, but it just usually takes an unnecessarily prolonged total of time. It can get a whilst for the novice chef or inexperienced person to grasp sharpening with a h2o stone (most folks just use all those awful supermarket metallic disc sharpeners) but the results are perfectly really worth it. On the 6000 grit aspect, i’ve located that transferring the knife again and forth genuinely quick allows much less area for error and gives it a mirror end.

6000# side can give your knife a shining end. It is so sharp right after my kitchen area knife bought sharpened on this. I even minimize my finger, spilled a good deal blood when i tried using to clean the blade.

I am providing this evaluate 3 stars out of 5, only because the item arrived with a quarter inch chunk damaged off of the #1000 grit facet of the stone. I could return it, but really don’t experience like likely by way of the stress of spending to ship it again. It operates the way it is, so i’ll just cling on to it. The stone itself, minus the obvious flaw, will work excellent. I’m in a position to get a respectably polished edge from the #6000 grit aspect and the #1000 facet tends to make swift operate of reshaping a bevel when necessary. It is really a very good stone for a good price, it just wants to be taken care of extra very carefully from the seller. The merchandise box by itself was ruined when i acquired it, so i am assuming they merely transported me an presently weakened product.

King 47506 a thousand/6000 mixture grit waterstone. This is a fantastic item at a acceptable price from a japanese buying and selling company in nyc. It will take time to master how to use a waterstone to sharpen knives, but it is not going to damage the edges of high priced japanese cutlery like an automated sharpener may well. A further additionally from korin is they send out you a catalogue with your obtain that incorporates a ton of valuable details on japanese cutlery.

I viewed a couple of videos on sharpening to get the technique down and with a little bit of practice it will work good. This is the initially drinking water stone i have made use of. I viewed a several films on sharpening to get the approach down and with a little bit of observe it operates wonderful. The a thousand grit side will have on down a whole lot more quickly than the 6000 aspect. I propose acquiring a flattening stone so you can occasionally correct it back again up.

A little bit deceptive item description. The screen website page plainly states a plastic stand, utilised to keep the stone in area, is component of the solution when bought. I obtained two stones, a single for myself and a present for my major other, and i did not get even just one stand. Ground shipping also took a 7 days and a 50 percent (purchased on a tues, arrived fri of the adhering to week) to get from coastline to coastline (cali to fla) so hold that in mind when ordering from the east coast. On to the very good information, the stone itself is effective like a charm. I’m a chef by trade and i’ve utilised several of these whetstones and tri-stones in my vocation and this is surely just one of the ideal. The 6000 grit side presents my filet knife an extremely limited edge. Remarkably advisable for any person who needs one thing just small of a sushi-grade sharpening stone.
